The much-admired original was done in marble in 1908 by the prominent sculptor, Gutzon Borglum. Borglum would later design and execute the huge sculpture groups at Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Mount Rushmore, South Dakota. This bronze copy of the original was donated to the university in 1969 by the industrialist, book and art collector and philanthropist, Philip D.
